Pretty cakes

cantik-manis-2

I have been wanting to make these pretty cakes since I saw them at Vania's kitchen.
I did try to make these cakes once without a recipe and I failed. For a long time, recipes were passed from mothers to daughters. I have a friend who is an excellent cook and baker. Her food is delicious and her cakes always come out beautifully. However I can not rely on a recipe from her because she eye-balled most of her ingredients. She gets most of her recipes from her mother and she does not have any exact measurement for her ingredients.

Well, go back to these pretty cakes. These cakes remind me of my childhood. Every Sunday, after church, my father would give me some money to buy snacks before going home. Around my church in Bandung, there were many food vendors selling varieties of food. Noodles soup, fried tofu, bakeries, ice creams, spring rolls, veggies fritters, yellow rice and many more. My sister and I would buy others food after we bought our pretty cakes. So yesterday, I took some of my afternoon time to make these cakes. Lucky, I have quite lots of hunkwe flour on hand. Traditionally, these pretty cakes are wrapped in plastic sheets but since I did not have any plastic sheets, I used my silicon muffins molds.

The recipe for Sweet and Pretty cakes

Ingredients :

100 gr colored mutiara sago (pacar China)
50 gr mung bean (hunkwe) flour (mine has vanilla in it so I forgo the vanilla)
500 cc coconut milk
1/4 tsp salt
100 gr granulated sugar
1/8 tsp vanilla
plastic sheets for wrapping

Directions :

Cook sago pits until done and transparent, rinse and drain. Diluted mung bean flour with part of coconut milk and set aside.
Boil remaining coconut milk with salt, then add flour liquid and stir. Add sugar and vanilla, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Add sago pit, stir well and remove. Drop a scoop of the mixture in the muffin mold and filled it to the brim. Do the same to the rest of the mixture.

Spring is still in the air. We have been experiencing colder spring this year. I do not mind the cooler air but I am worry that my flowers and vegetables will not grow this year. However, my fear is not necessary as my friend's yard is filled with beautiful flowers. Well, I hope I do not have to wait too long to enjoy my flowers!
